My visit some two years ago now was very enjoyable. My family and I found our descendant (Gr-Gr-Gr Grandfather), LT Frederick Kinney's (Co B, 114th USCT) name on the memorial on Plaque #D-113. We also had a wonderful opportunity to meet and speak with Dr. Frank Smith and were privileged to make a donation to the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum. I was a visitor there a few years ago and had a heart wrenching day looking over the wall and finding my descendants names on the wall.My Gr Gr Grandfather George W. Lyons of the 41st Co.F,My Gr Gr Uncle James Lyons of Co. B 54th Mass and my Gr Gr Uncle James Irons of the 22nd Inf. Co K. I at the time didn't meet Mr Smith but plan to return this year to hopefully meet and share. The statue done by Mr. Hamilton was so honorably done in a state that I had to email him and thank him for what he did. His kind reply to me was a signed poster of the statue. I am a third grade school teacher at Garrison Elementary School and decided that it would be appropriate to learn our community history outside of a textbook! It wasn't anything like I expected. I was afraid that the students would become restless and get bored, but to my surprise it was really interesting and entertaining! Mr. Johnson did an excellent job! We all learned together so much about the U Street Heritage Trail. We started in the museum with a mini lesson about the Freedom Fighters and the campsites that were once located where Garrison is today! We went walking to various sites with Mr. Johnson giving us the history of each site. Mr. Johnson was extremely animated and kept the kids involved. Upon our return, he allowed the students to dress up in the war uniforms and carry the riffles. What an exciting day! I recommend this trip to every teacher in DC! Want other way to end such an enjoyable trip than to go to Ben's Chili Bowl!
I visited the Museum/Memorial on February 19, 2011. It was a pleasure meeting Hari Jones and listening to the stories about the USCT especially the information about the 21st Regiment from South Carolina. I can't wait until the opening of their new site in July.
